White Oak Manor

Jefferson, Texas

Whenever I’m asked what I’d like for a gift on any special occasion, I answer, "A trip to a haunted B&B." One year for Mother’s Day, my husband took me to White Oak Manor, a B&B in Jefferson, TX. We arrived in mid-morning and, after we checked in, spent the rest of the day prowling Jefferson and Caddo Lake. We turned in late that night

.

Rumor has it that Stephen Spielberg spent some time in Jefferson. Supposedly, he stayed at the Excelsior House and left in the middle of the night when a rocking chair in his room would not stop rocking, although no one he could see was in the chair. He and his crew spent the rest of the night at a motel outside of town. Also, the rumor says that Speilberg filmed the huge cypress tree outside our bedroom window at White Oak Manor for the movie. True or not, the tree has an eerie presence to it, and whenever I would look at it, I felt a chill.

During the night, I woke up several times and heard cats meowing in our room, although there were no cats in there. Once, one of the phantom cats woke me up when it actually ran across our bed. I felt it bound onto the bed, then its feet as it hurried across us and jumped to the floor on the other side of my husband. Then it meowed again

.

The next morning I woke early, and since it would be a while before breakfast, I wandered outside with my camera to take some pictures. A bench set in the front yard, and the owners had placed a straw-stuffed doll on it. A cat was curled up beside the doll. I took a picture…and someone else also showed up on the bench:

At breakfast, I asked the woman owner if anyone who had ever owned the house enjoyed cats. She informed me that she believed one of her departed relatives had indeed loved cats and allowed them in the house. However, while they did have some cats now, they fed them outside and didn’t allow them in the house. I winked and told her that the cats had definitely been in the house that previous night…in spirit, anyway.
